Opioid use disorders statistics

Opioid Use Disorders affect over 16 million people worldwide and over 2.1 million in the United States. Over 120,000 deaths worldwide are caused by opioids each year. There are as many patients regularly using opioids as there are patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, psoriatic arthritis, and epilepsy in the United States. An Opioid Use Disorder diagnosis is based on the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 and includes a desire to obtain and take opioids despite social and professional consequences.
