Medication Assisted Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an addiction treatment protocol that combines medication that alleviates the urge to use substances with therapies that manage unhealthy behaviors (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy).
Suboxone is just one medication we use in MAT to treat dependence on opioids. Methadone relieves the urge to use opioids. These medications work by blocking the brain’s cell receptors from binding with opioid molecules, eliminating the body’s ability to receive and process the substance.
Combined with treatments like reality therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy, MAT has a number of benefits for those struggling with opioid addiction. MAT benefits include:
- Reduction of cravings and withdrawal symptoms
- Reduced risk of relapse and overdose
- Increased ability to maintain employment
- Increased ability to maintain sobriety for extended periods of time
Suboxone for Opioid Addiction
Suboxone was specifically designed to combat opioid addiction. It contains two medications: buprenorphine and naloxone. These medications work synergistically to reduce opioid cravings and block opioid absorption in the body.
Naloxone is known by another name: Narcan. Narcan is an emergency medication used by EMTs when they need to revive an overdosed patient. It works by binding to the cell receptors in the brain that accept the opioid molecules, effectively blocking them from being absorbed and processed. Patients shot with Narcan go into immediate withdrawal due to the efficacy of the Narcan medication.
Depending on the severity of a patient’s addiction, Suboxone treatment can either be short-term or long-term.
Behavioral Therapy
Medication is just one part of MAT treatment. In addition to medication, Affinity Healthcare Group offers behavioral therapy at our Suboxone clinic in Barrington. Behavioral therapy instills lifelong sobriety in each of our clients with evidence-based treatments that help addicts get back on their feet.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a psychological treatment based on three core principles. First, addiction is partly based on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking. These unhelpful ways of thinking are also called “cognitive distortions.” Second, addiction is partly based on unhealthy behaviors and habits. A portion of your recovery will be spent breaking these habits. Lastly, and most importantly, people suffering from addiction can relieve their symptoms by using effective coping mechanisms.
CBT helps alter unhealthy behaviors and thinking patterns by giving individuals the ability to recognize cognitive distortions, adopt coping mechanisms, and develop a greater sense of confidence.
Reality Therapy
William Glasser developed reality therapy which revolves around viewing behaviors as choices and not as results of mental illness.
Reality therapy helps opioid addicts keep the consequences of their decisions and actions in their purview. By putting the power of choice back into the hand of an addict, they take ownership of their past and future, leaning less on finger-pointing and more on constructive behaviors that will propel them into a life of successful sobriety.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing works by urging people to change the behaviors leading them to make unhealthy choices. There are two goals in motivational interviewing: increased motivation and a commitment to change. Motivation and a willingness to change are vital in the fight against opioid addiction.
Solution Focused Therapy
Solution focused therapy is uninterested in delving into medical and psychological histories and instead focuses on solutions in the here and now. To do this, a therapist will use appropriate coaching and questioning to lead a client down a path that results in clear, tangible, logical plans for contemporary problems that can be acted upon immediately.
