New Jersey Opioid Abuse Statistics
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2018, nearly 90% of drug overdose deaths in New Jersey involved opioids. Though deaths involving prescription opioids were down nationwide, deaths involving synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl are increasing.
Prescription data from New Jersey reflects this nationwide trend. In 2018, New Jersey doctors wrote 38.9 opioid prescriptions per 100 New Jersey residents, lower than the national average of 51.4 residents per 100. According to the evidence from NIDA, the opioid pandemic is evolving as prescription opioid overdoses decline while overdoses from cheaper, synthetic opioids increase.
Types of Opioid Drugs
There are many naturally occurring and synthetically-produced opioids. Opioid drugs have proven medical use and are available by prescription, but are also available on the black market. Because many types of opioids can be produced en masse and inexpensively, there are an abundance of poor-quality, illegally-produced and dangerous opioids in circulation.
Here are some of the most commonly-abused synthetic opioids listed by brand name:
- Codeine
- Fentanyl
- Vicodin
- Dilaudid
- Demerol
- Methadone
- OxyContin
- Percocet
People experiencing substance use disorders also abuse naturally-occurring opioids such as:
- Morphine
- Narcotine
- Codeine
- Thebaine
- Papaverine
- Narceine
Signs of Opioid Addiction
Opioid addiction cuts across social boundaries of age, gender, sex, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and class. These substances work directly on the brain’s reward center, and through use, anyone can develop an opioid use disorder. Understanding the mechanisms of deep-rooted chemical and psychological need for opioids helps organizations like Affinity Healthcare Group identify and address the signs of opioid addiction.
A person experiencing opioid use disorder becomes obsessed with the drive to find and consume opioids – no matter the cost to their family life, social life, and professional life. If you or a loved one are starting to become wholly preoccupied with the need to take opioids and are engaging in risky, dangerous behaviors or are otherwise neglecting meaningful relationships and obligations in your life due to a compulsion to consume opioids, then you may have an opioid use disorder.
Outpatient Opioid Treatment Services
Affinity Healthcare Group offers a clinically-based multidisciplinary approach to treating opioid use disorders. Our outpatient treatment is patient-centered and tailored to meet your personal recovery goals without sacrificing dignity and respect. Affinity Healthcare Group combines the latest in clinical addiction treatment such as medication assisted treatment, and psychological treatment therapy to treat the underlying causes of your addiction. We also establish clear and actionable goals for your new life in recovery. This holistic approach is called medication assisted treatment (MAT).
Medication Assisted Treatment
Our opioid treatment includes MAT or medication assisted treatment to New Jersey residents. Medication assisted treatment uses a two-pronged approach to treating opioid use disorders: clinical treatment paired with behavioral therapies and counseling. Studies repeatedly show that the two-pronged approach found in MAT is significantly more effective at treating opioid use disorders together than when clinical treatment and psychological treatment are used separately.
Clinical Treatment
This process tapers a patient off of opioid dependency by administering a safe, medically-supervised opioid such as methadone and suboxone. This opioid treatment is administered in smaller and smaller doses to help patients reduce and eventually eliminate their chemical dependency.
Psychological Treatment
In opioid treatment, our patients also receive behavioral therapy, group therapy, and counseling to treat any underlying psychological issues that may have led them toward substance abuse. Patients learn about the addiction process and are taught valuable skills to help them cope with the psychological, social, and emotional toll of opioid use disorder.
